Most people would agree that one of the best parts about traveling is the food. And in Beijing, you are hardly disappointed. I have eaten so well since I've been here. I've dined on Japanese, Chinese and Malaysian food and it's all been absolutely delicious. Yum. In fact the worst food I've had was eating muesli and boxed milk for a makeshift dinner - the best thing I could find at the on-site western grocery store on the Friendship Hotel compound.
Last Friday, a great reprieve from an all day work meeting was a large lunch of Chinese food including the famous Peking Duck which lives up to it's reputation. I wish I'd taken a photo, but should I have it again, I'll be sure to post one. But a brief description: you take a very thin rice crepe, put a few pieces of roast duck, some hoisin sauce, green onion strips and a strip of cucumber on it, fold it up and mmmmm, so good. We also had eggplant, a spicy mushroom dish, deep fried rib meat, beef and hot peppers, and a cellophane noodle salad with assorted veggies.
Yesterday I tried the Chinese buffet breakfast at the Friendship Palace (again part of the whole Friendship compound). Pretty much anything I'd never had before or couldn't identify, I tried: cooked ox tongue, steamed buns, fried rice ball (which was mashed rice), egg custard, rice porridge, and various vegetables.
