Our hotel comes with a breakfast of warm soy milk, hard boiled eggs, several stir-fried dishes, steamed buns and rice porridge – a hardy breakfast to face a morning at the program work station. Sporting two pairs of socks, three pairs of long underwear, jeans, three tops, coat, hat, scarf and gloves, my toes only went numb for a little while.
We spent the rest of the day in another meeting at the much warmer and more comfortable hotel. What were we doing in these meetings? My coworker Gretchen is working with the staff to revise the indicators they are using to monitor and evaluate the process and progress of the program. A second part of the program is to train capable youth in the villages to be peer educators in turn transferring information about sexual and reproductive health, and warn about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse to other youth in their villages.
It was a long but good day…
